Rep Your City!
Gonaïves is a coastal city and commune located in the Artibonite Department of Haiti. It is the largest city in the department and holds historical significance as one of the major centers for the fight for Haitian independence.
Around 1422, a group of Taíno people founded Gonaïves and named it Gonaibo, referring to a locality within the cacicat of Jaragua. The Gulf of Gonâve was subsequently named after this town.
In 1802, a pivotal battle of the Haitian Revolution, known as the Battle of Ravine-à-Couleuvres, took place in the vicinity of Gonaïves.
Gonaïves is renowned as Haiti's city of independence, as it was the site where Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared Haiti's independence from France on January 1, 1804. He accomplished this by reading the Act of Independence, which was composed by Boisrond Tonnerre, at the Place d'Armes in the town. It's also worth noting that Marie-Claire Heureuse Félicité, the spouse of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, passed away in this city in August 1858.
